Hey, I’d love if some of you sent in your reactions to that statement that Mitt’s wife made in regards to work. The whole working mother thing that is. I know there are diverse opinions on that one due to the knowledge that she had 5 paid nannies.

Tess Gerritsen is an American Author of Chinese descent who resides in California. Shhe is most well known for being the author of the books that sprung forth the Rizzoli and Isles Series. She followed her famlies wishes early on in her life and became a medical doctor, soon however, she began to write books and eventually was successfully published. Her latest book is set in Boston’s china town and struck a chord with me due to the theme.
I am also of chinese descent, but did not grow up in a home where my ethnicity was celebrated, learned about or even talked about. I never saw asian role models or heard stories about chinese history and mythology. I was first introduced to all of those things recently in her book. I wrote to her telling her exactly that and to my surprise she wrote back. She was so empathetic without ever being patronizing to me. I felt like we had this shared human experience- which was very special to me because I had no chinese role models in my life before. She even gave me book reccomendations and introduced me to other chinese and chinese american authors out there. She gave me a very invaluable experience to take positive steps to a healthy self identity.

Well, most of my heros are from nasa, because I wanted to be an astronaut for most of my childhood. Here’s the next extraordinary woman I looked up to!
The first black woman in space, Mae Jemison, is also a very interesting and exceptional woman! She attended stanford university at sixteen years old and recounts the bigorty she faced by teachers in that field. She has done an extrodinary amount of work as well! She retired after one space lfight in order to start her own technology company. she also worked as a doctor in the peace corps in tanzania and other places. one of the stories that i read recounted how she ordered a us milirary plane to pick up a dying peace corps member with meningitis- surely fatal. she didnt have the qualifications to make such a descision, especially because it cost 80,000 to perform such a task, but she saved that members life!
Please read more about her! She is quite an interesting person!
And please keep submitting your own heros to be featured!

Thought I would share with you one of my many childhood heroes tonight.
This is Susan Helms. She has the second highest posistion that is obtainable as a Lieutenant General. Whats more, there are only 32 posistions accross the entire USA and she is the only woman to hold such a rank- ever I think! Less than .5% not 5%, point five of comissioned officers- even make it to the top three ranks. Shes been serving for 32 years. The Leutenant Gen posistion is only bestowed upon those who have been serving for a minimum of 20 years.
With NASA she deployed a 200million dollar tracking and data relay satellite. She was on five different missions and her final mission she lived on the international space station for six months. She’s logged over 5,000 hours in space and holds the record for the longest space walk or “EVA” to this day at 8 hours 56 minutes.
I was reading an interview recently with Susan and her crew mate Jim Voss and I was sad to see what the interview questions were like. One asked how she styles her hair and the other was if she ever did “hanky panky” with her crew mates up in space seeing as there were so many macho boys up there with her! Here that interviewer sat, with an extraordinary person, and decided to ask that. I was disappointed in that.
Anyway, she retired from NASA and works for the Air Force again.
She has been a real inspiration to me in recent times for a few reasons. I am so inspired to always “aim high” when I read about all that she has accomplished. Also, I love the fact she is of an average body size, intelligent, confident and strong. After struggling with an eating disorder and finally ending it, I decided to stop working out as not to spiral out of control until i could be more confident I could be healthy about it. Seeing her be able to eat right, stay an average body size, but still enjoy her jogging makes me feel more in control. I want to be able to enjoy my sport without fear of falling into my past. She gives me the confidence to do that!
Furthermore, she is a part of STEM. A program that aims to get students and educators alike excited about science, technology, engineering and mathematics. I listened to her lecture on it and it was pretty great. She def is trying to encourage more young girls who want to persue such fields to do so! I know even in my recent years I was told you cant go into the armed forces, you wont be good at math, etc. etc. Be a teacher or a nurse. There’s absolutley nothing wrong with those fields, but not everyone wants to be in them and it’s sad out society for so long made those two jobs their only options
