Is breast-feeding while in uniform conduct unbecoming to a military mom?
The debate over nursing in public got a new layer recently, when photos taken on an Air Force base began to circulate online. In the series of tasteful professional photos showing beaming moms as they nurse their kids, one jumps out: the photo of two servicewomen with their uniform shirts unbuttoned and hiked up to breast-feed.

side 1: ”There isn’t a policy saying we can or cannot breast-feed in uniform,”  Echegoyen-McCabe says. “I think it’s something that every military mom who is breast-feeding has done. … I think we do need to be able to breast-feed in uniform and be protected.”
side 2:
“I would never nurse in uniform. I took my child to the bathroom or a private office when her nanny brought her to me …. Not because I was ashamed of nursing, nor of being a mother. All the guys knew I pumped. The military is not a civilian job. We go to combat and we make life or death decisions, and not just for ourselves but for those we lead. The same reason I would never nurse in uniform is the same reason I do not chew gum, or walk and talk on my cell phone, or even run into the store in my utility uniform. … We are warfighting professionals. Women before us have worked too hard to earn and retain the respect of their male peers. I don’t want my Marines to look at me any other way than as a Marine. When I am asking them to flyinto combat with me and do a dangerous mission, I do not want them to have the mental image of a babe at my breast. I want them to only see me as a Marine. Let’s be a realistic folks. We give up many freedoms being in the military…Breastfeeding in front of my fellow Marines was one of them.”

I am wondering if you might be willing to forward this to any female friends/contacts (ages 18+)

The tagline, in small print under the photos, is “Never get bored of how your girlfriend looks again.

This photo appeared in the September 2011 issue of Desktop. This Australian magazine is aimed at graphic designers. The ad itself is for Olympus cameras and their art filters. In the ad are four identical images of a woman with different effects applied.

Do I have any comic book readers in the house? I was reading something recently about the alienation of women readers within the comic book genre due to the depiction of the female form. For example, in this picture you can clearly see the unnatural way in which this women is posing. I went into a comic book store recently (no, I’m not a comic reader) and picked up three copies of Wonder Woman. I was actually surprised to find the women more accurately depicted than the above photo. The women were wearing suits and had normal sized breasts. What a crazy idea, right? Hah.

I thought it would be fun just to ask what you all would have done…
I recently went to a comedy routine in the city and sat in on a routine done by a semi famous male comedian. He began on jokes about grammar and received laughs. He then moved on to movies and got a few more laughs. From movies he went into TV shows. “What’s the fatal flaw of “x” character?” He asked us. “SHES A WOMAN!” He blurted out. Applause.
“Now I’m all for women’s rights,” he said backing himself up (not really), “I think men should fight for women’s rights. Because obviously they can’t do it themselves! You know… this whole wage gap. It wouldn’t be there if women just worked harder and the same amount of hours as men.” I stood up from me mid-center seat and began walking to the door. “You know, when I did radio one time… they told me. Don’t make fun of gays or blacks. I asked what I could say about women…” His voice became more faint as I vacated the area until I heard nothing. I let the door slam on the way out.
I sort of wish I said something to accompany my exit, but it was at a school and I felt it wouldn’t have been appropriate. Although, neither were his jokes. What would you have done? Stayed? Booed? Let me know!

For some reason I am still shocked when I see shirts like this for sale at stores in the mall. These two shirts are from JC Penny in case you were wondering. But heres the good news of the day. The users of the internet began a petition at change.org and allegedly the shirts have been taken down. Interesting.

Maggie Goes on a Diet is about a 14 year old girl who transforms herself from a dumpy overweight girl, to a “pretty” soccer star. What to dislike about this:1. self published by a male author2. amazon says its for children 4-83. use of word, “normal sized”4. fodder for eating disorders5. self esteem issues6. the book cover- i mean, come on!

I haven’t given you a sexist ad in a while, so here you go. Objectification of women is sure to make people clean up their dog’s poop.

Meet Victoria Woodhull. (1838 – 1927)
She was one of the main movers and shakers of American woman’s suffrage movement in the 19th century. In fact, she even campaigned twice for the United States Presidency- before women were even permitted to vote. She expoused many ideals and reforms during her run with politics in regard to the working class being up against the rich and ever so corrupt business elite. Some of her ideals remain controversial and still much debated today.
